Artist in Residence Lauren Januhowski

Lauren spent a few days in April as Artist in Residence at Parkhotel Mondschein. The artist from Texas has been living in Paris for several years and has exhibited her fabric collages around the world. She studied in New York and found her way to art partly through her mother, who worked extensively with textiles. For her, self-expression through the combination and composition of materials always came naturally.

Her work focuses on the theme of space and how people interact with it. She tells stories of women’s experiences - of their relationships with each other and with the environments they inhabit. Fleeting moments and emotional experiences - both her own and those of the people around her - are translated into tangible materials, colours, and forms, brought to canvas through fabric.

The tactile presence of the fabrics and the interplay of layers, folds, and overlaps give her work a physical depth - a multidimensionality that reaches beyond what meets the eye. This is further intensified by the slow, repetitive processes of embroidery, sewing, and assembling materials.

During her stay at Parkhotel Mondschein, she was particularly inspired by the colours and textures of the space. She absorbed the atmosphere and observed how people made the carefully designed rooms their own. While design and functionality create the foundation of a space, its atmosphere is only completed through human experience. This momentary sense of home in a public setting is what she observed - and what she aims to reflect in her art.

Her artwork for Parkhotel Mondschein was inspired by a scene of a group of women by the pool. With patterns and colours echoing the hotel’s and the park’s design, she captured a sense of calm, light-hearted springtime and created a piece that blends seamlessly into the spirit of the design hotel.
