Artists in Residence: Irene Arcas and Karla Voleau

The Spanish artist Irene Fernandez Arcas and the French artist Karla Hiraldo Voleau spent a few weeks in the summer of 2021 in the not-yet-renovated spaces of Parkhotel Mondschein. Inspired by the spirit of the place, they created a series of works now exhibited throughout the hotel’s rooms and hallways. In doing so, the artistic concept was brought into harmony with the hotel’s overall design – laying the foundation for its creative identity.

The two artists bring together the hotel’s past, present, and future – the memory of what this house has been and the vision of what it can be. Irene perceived Parkhotel Mondschein as a figure in its own right, a character with its own life and genius loci, its own spirit of place. They both drew particular inspiration from the hotel’s expansive garden, where many of Irene’s drawings took shape.

Their art runs through the entire hotel, reflecting their individual forms of expression – at times even overlapping. While Karla worked with photography, Irene expressed her perspective on the hotel through painting. In some of the works, these two approaches merge, giving rise to a vibrant, poetic, and evocative aesthetic.
